Bedroom Wall Art, Chosen for Rest Instead of Impact
Bedroom wall art follows the opposite rules to the rest of the house. Where a living room rewards contrast and energy, a bedroom rewards low saturation, soft subjects and fewer pieces. The practical version: one piece above the bed at roughly two-thirds the headboard width, in a muted palette, hung 6–10 inches above the headboard.
This collection holds 250 pieces filtered for bedrooms — sizes from 16×32 up to 96×96 in., with vibe filters for Serene, Cozy, Intimate and Minimal, and palette filters for Neutral, Cool and Earth. Those four filters do most of the work of choosing wall art for a bedroom, because calm is a property of palette and subject before it's a property of style.
Know your bed size already? The chart below converts it into an art width in one step. Then use the filters on the grid to narrow by palette and vibe.
Wall Art for Bedroom Walls: How to Choose
Bedrooms are the easiest room to over-decorate and the hardest to make restful. Five checks, in order, will get you there.
- Drop the saturation before you pick the subject. Muted blues, sage, dusty rose, warm grey and sandy neutrals read as calm at a glance. High-contrast black-and-white belongs in a hallway.
- Measure the headboard, not the wall. Headboard width × 0.66 is your minimum art width. A queen headboard at 60 inches wants at least 40 inches of art.
- Choose soft subjects. Landscapes, botanicals, abstract textures and gentle figurative work settle a room. Kinetic, crowded or confrontational imagery keeps it awake.
- Count the pieces, then remove one. Bedrooms almost always look calmer with one large piece than with five small ones. Empty wall is part of the design here.
- Check the morning light. The wall opposite the bed is the first thing you see each day, and it's usually the wall that gets direct sun. Put your most-loved piece there, not your boldest.
Browse by mood using the Vibe filter, or start with nature, landscape and texture — the three subjects that most reliably suit a bedroom.
Bedroom Wall Art Size Chart
Your bed is the reference point for every wall in the room. These widths assume a single piece; for a diptych or triptych, add 2–4 inches between panels and treat the total span as one measurement.
| Bed or furniture | Typical width | Recommended art width | Sizes to filter for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twin bed | 39 in. | 26–30 in. | 30×30, 30×20, 24×36 |
| Full / double bed | 54 in. | 36–40 in. | 36×24, 40×30, 36×48 |
| Queen bed | 60 in. | 40–45 in. | 40×30, 45×30, 40×40, 48×24 |
| King bed | 76 in. | 50–57 in. | 54×36, 56×40, 60×30, 48×36 |
| California king | 72 in. | 48–54 in. | 48×36, 54×36, 48×24 |
| Dresser or vanity | 60 in. | 40–45 in. | 40×30, 45×30, 48×24 |
| Narrow wall beside the bed | — | 16–24 in. | 16×32, 18×32, 20×30, 20×25 |
| Wall opposite the bed | — | 60–75% of wall area | 48×48, 60×40, 45×60, 60×60 |
Hanging height: above a bed, leave 6–10 inches between the top of the headboard and the bottom edge of the frame. On a wall with no furniture, centre the piece 57–60 inches from the floor. Bedroom art generally wants to hang a little lower than living room art — you spend most of your time in this room sitting or lying down, not standing.
Wall Art for Bedroom Walls Above the Bed
The wall above the bed is the highest-impact surface in the room and the one people get wrong most often. It's also the only wall in the house where weight and mounting genuinely matter, because you sleep underneath it.
- One horizontal piece is the safest choice. It echoes the shape of the bed and needs only one set of anchors. Two-thirds of the headboard width, centred on the bed rather than the wall.
- A diptych or triptych fills a king wall. Two or three matching portraits with a 3-inch gap span 76 inches without needing a single oversized piece.
- Keep it above head height. Six to ten inches of clearance above the headboard. Lower than that and it feels cramped; higher and it floats away from the bed.
- Skip glass over the bed. Our pieces use sublimated fabric on a 1 mm frame — no glazing to worry about, and light enough that most sizes hold on rated drywall anchors.
- Match the subject to the sightline. You'll never see this wall while lying in bed. Choose it for how the room reads when you walk in, and save your favourite image for the wall opposite.
Mounting above a bed: anchor into a stud where you can, or use rated toggle bolts and two mounting points for anything over 30 lbs. Our 1 mm frames keep even large formats light, but two anchors instead of one is worth the extra five minutes on this particular wall.
Abstract Bedroom Wall Art
Abstract work is the most requested subject for bedrooms, and for a good reason: it carries mood without carrying narrative. A landscape asks you to look at a place. A soft abstract asks nothing, which is exactly what you want at 11pm.
- Low-contrast abstracts over graphic ones. Colour-field washes, soft gradients and organic forms settle a room. Hard-edged geometry and primary colours energise it.
- Texture reads as abstract at scale. Sand ripples, water surfaces and weathered material make excellent bedroom pieces — see texture wall art.
- One dominant colour beats a full palette. Limited-palette abstracts feel more peaceful and are far easier to coordinate with bedding.
- Large formats work better than small. Abstract work needs room to breathe; at 24 inches it reads as a swatch, at 48 it reads as art.

Wall Art Ideas for Bedrooms
Six approaches that hold up in real bedrooms, ordered from lowest to highest commitment.
1. One large piece above the bed
The default, and the one that fails least often. Two-thirds headboard width, muted palette, done. Filter by Size Category → Medium for most bed sizes.
2. The matched pair
Two identical portraits flanking the centre line of the bed. Reads as deliberate symmetry and suits king and California king walls without oversizing.
3. The waking wall
Put your best piece on the wall you face when you wake, not behind your head. Most people decorate the wall they never look at. See landscape.
4. Textile instead of framed
A fabric piece softens sound as well as sightlines, which matters more in a bedroom than anywhere else. See fabric wall art.
5. The dresser vignette
A horizontal piece above the dresser, layered with a lamp and a tray. Grounds the furniture and needs no second wall. Try still life subjects.
6. Something personal, printed properly
A wedding photo or a place that means something belongs in a bedroom more than any other room. Upload it through our custom print service.
Bedroom Wall Art by Interior Style
Filter combinations that match common bedroom styles. Use these as a starting point rather than a rule.
| Bedroom style | Subject to look for | Palette filter | Vibe filter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Modern / minimal | Abstract, architectural, texture | Neutral | Minimal |
| Bohemian | Botanical, textile, illustration | Earth, Warm | Cozy |
| Traditional / classic | Floral still life, soft landscape, portrait | Warm | Serene |
| Coastal | Seascape, water texture, botanical | Cool | Serene |
| Romantic | Soft figurative, vintage botanical | Warm, Neutral | Intimate |
| Scandi / Japandi | Line work, single-subject nature | Neutral | Minimal |
For floral and botanical subjects specifically, see flowers wall art. For polished, gallery-ready presentation in a classic room, see framed wall art.
What You're Hanging Over Your Bed
Bedrooms are lit softly and viewed close up, so surface finish shows here in a way it doesn't across a large living room.
- Sublimated fabric dye, not surface ink. The dye bonds into the fabric rather than sitting on it, so colour keeps its depth under lamplight instead of flattening out.
- A 1 mm low-profile frame. Sits close to the wall and stays light — which is the reason large formats are practical above a bed at all.
- No glazing. Nothing to reflect a bedside lamp back at you, and nothing breakable above your head.
- Printed from high-resolution source files matched to every size offered, so a 60-inch piece is as sharp as a 20-inch one.
- Designed in Salt Lake City, Utah, shipped within 4 days, and covered by our No Hassle Guarantee.

Bedroom Wall Art: Frequently Asked Questions
What size wall art should go above a bed?
Aim for roughly two-thirds the width of your headboard. A queen headboard at 60 inches wants art around 40–45 inches wide; a king at 76 inches wants 50–57 inches. Centre it on the bed rather than the wall, and if you're between two sizes, take the larger one — undersized art above a bed is the most common bedroom decorating mistake.
How high should wall art hang above a bed?
Leave 6–10 inches between the top of the headboard and the bottom edge of the frame. On walls without furniture, centre the piece 57–60 inches from the floor. Bedroom art works best slightly lower than living room art, because you spend most of your time in the room sitting or lying down.
What kind of wall art is best for a bedroom?
Low-saturation palettes and soft subjects. Muted blues, sage greens, dusty pinks, warm greys and sandy neutrals read as calm; landscapes, botanicals, abstract textures and gentle figurative work suit the room. Avoid high-contrast black-and-white, neon, and crowded or kinetic imagery — all of them keep a room feeling awake.
Is abstract wall art good for a bedroom?
Yes, and it's the most popular bedroom subject for a reason: abstract work carries mood without carrying a story you have to read. Choose low-contrast colour-field washes, soft gradients and organic forms over hard-edged geometry, and stick to one dominant colour rather than a full palette.
Is it safe to hang art above where you sleep?
With proper mounting, yes. Anchor into a stud where possible, or use rated toggle bolts with two mounting points for anything over 30 lbs. Our pieces help here on two counts: a 1 mm low-profile frame keeps even large formats light, and there's no glass to worry about.
Should bedroom wall art match the bedding?
Echo it, don't match it. Pull one or two accent tones from the artwork into cushions or a throw. Art bought to match a duvet set dates the moment the bedding changes, and reads as a showroom display rather than a room someone assembled over time.
Can you do a gallery wall in a bedroom?
You can, but it's harder to keep restful. If you do, hold one unifying element across every piece — same frame, same palette or same subject — and keep the total count low. One large piece is calmer nine times out of ten.
What should go on the wall opposite the bed?
Your favourite piece. That wall is the first thing you see each morning and the one you actually look at, unlike the wall behind your head. It usually gets the most direct light too, so choose something you want to see in full sun.
How much does bedroom wall art cost here?
This collection starts at $103 and rises with size, with the largest formats reaching into the $1,800–$2,100 range. Every size of a given design is priced on its product page, so you can compare a 30×40 against a 48×60 before deciding.
