Wall Art for Living Room: Pieces Sized for the Room Everyone Sees

Wall art for a living room should be scaled to the furniture below it, not to the wall behind it. The standard rule: art above a sofa spans two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa's width, with its center about 57–60 inches from the floor. Get those two numbers right and almost any piece works.

This collection holds 140 pieces chosen specifically for living rooms — the room that gets the most traffic, the most guests and the most photographs in any home. Sizes run from 20×20 in. up to 96×96 in., so you can fill a narrow console wall or a double-height stairwell from the same collection. Everything is produced with our sublimated fabric dye process on a lightweight 1 mm low-profile frame, designed in Salt Lake City, and backed by our No Hassle Guarantee.

If you already know your size, jump straight to the product grid and use the size filter. If you're still deciding, the sizing chart and placement guide below will get you there in about two minutes.

How to Choose Wall Art for a Living Room

Most living room walls fail for one of two reasons: the art is too small, or it was chosen before the room was. Work through these five checks in order and you'll avoid both.

  • Measure the sofa, not the wall. Your sofa width × 0.66 is the minimum art width. An 84-inch sofa needs at least 56 inches of art above it.
  • Pick the anchor piece first. The piece above the seating sets the palette. Everything else in the room follows it.
  • Echo colors, don't match them. Pull one or two accent tones from the art into cushions or ceramics. Matching the upholstery reads as a showroom; echoing reads as designed.
  • Check the ceiling. Standard 8-ft ceilings want art hung lower and wider. Ceilings of 10 ft and up can take tall vertical pieces or a stacked pair.
  • Plan the evening light. Living rooms are used most after dark. A picture light or a floor lamp angled at the art changes the room more than a second piece would.

Not sure which style suits the room yet? Browse by mood in abstract, nature, landscape or texture.

Living Room Wall Art Size Chart

Use the furniture underneath as the reference point. These widths assume a single piece; for a pair or triptych, add 2–4 inches of gap between panels and treat the total span as one measurement.

Furniture below Recommended art width Sizes to filter for
Loveseat, 60 in.40–45 in.40×30, 45×30, 40×40
Standard sofa, 84 in.56–63 in.60×30, 60×40, 60×45
Large sectional, 96 in.+64–75 in.72×36, 72×48, 75×60
Console or sideboard, 60 in.40–48 in.48×24, 48×36, 45×36
Fireplace mantel50–75% of mantel width36×48, 40×60, 30×60

Stairwell or double-height wall48 in.+ on the long side48×96, 64×96, 96×96

Hanging height: center the piece 57–60 inches from the floor. Above furniture, leave 6–10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom edge of the frame. When in doubt, hang lower — nearly every mistake in this category is hanging too high.

Large and Extra Large Wall Art for Living Rooms

Large wall art for a living room starts at roughly 36 inches on the short side. Extra large wall art for a living room begins around 60 inches and runs up to our 96×96 in. pieces — the range that suits sectionals, open-plan great rooms and two-story walls where a standard print disappears.

  • One large piece beats six small ones. It reads calmer, costs less to hang, and leaves the wall feeling finished rather than assembled.
  • Vertical scale lifts a low ceiling. A tall portrait piece draws the eye upward and makes an 8-ft room feel taller than a wide one does.
  • Weight isn't the problem people expect. Our 1 mm frames are light enough that most large sizes hang on standard drywall anchors — no stud hunting for typical pieces.
  • Subject matters more at scale. Landscapes, abstracts and bold graphic compositions are built to be read from across a room. Fine-detail illustrations can overwhelm at 72 inches.
  • Check the doorway before you order. Anything over 60 inches on the long side needs a clear path from your entry to the wall.

Wall Art Ideas for Living Rooms

Six approaches that work in real rooms, ordered from lowest to highest commitment. Each links to the collection that suits it best.

1. The single statement piece

One oversized work above the sofa. Simplest to execute, hardest to get wrong, and the look most people actually want when they say "gallery wall". Start in large wall art.

2. The matched pair

Two identical sizes hung side by side with a 3-inch gap. Reads as deliberate symmetry and fits sofas too wide for one standard piece. Filter for portrait orientation in the grid above.

3. The controlled gallery wall

Five to seven pieces sharing one unifying thread — same frame, same palette or same subject. Lay it out on the floor first, then transfer to the wall. See framed wall art.

4. The leaning console piece

A medium piece propped on a sideboard, layered with a plant and a ceramic. No holes in the wall, and easy to swap seasonally. Works well with still life subjects.

5. The texture mix

Pair a fabric piece with a framed print on adjacent walls. Two mediums make a room feel collected rather than ordered in one go. See fabric wall art.

6. Your own image, printed

A travel photograph or family shot printed at proper scale beats a generic print every time. Upload it to our custom print service and choose any size we offer.

Placement

Where Living Room Wall Art Belongs

Five walls carry most living rooms. Each one wants something slightly different.

  • Above the sofa. The default and the highest-impact spot. Two-thirds sofa width, 6–10 inches of clearance above the cushions.
  • Above the fireplace. The mantel becomes the baseline, so hang a little higher than usual. One piece only — a gallery wall competes with the firebox.
  • The long empty wall. No furniture means no constraints. This is where an extra large single piece or a triptych earns its place.
  • Above a console. A horizontal piece grounds the furniture. Leave 5–8 inches between the console top and the frame.
  • The stair-adjacent wall. In open-plan homes this wall is part of the living room. Use one tall vertical or a stepped series that follows the rise.

One wall in every room should stay empty. Restraint is what separates a styled room from a crowded one.

How it's made

What You're Actually Hanging

Living rooms are lit from more angles than any other room in the house, so surface and finish matter more here than they do in a bedroom or hallway. Here's what sits behind every piece in this collection.

  • Sublimated fabric dye, not surface ink. The dye bonds into the fabric rather than sitting on top of it, so color holds its depth under daylight and lamplight instead of flattening out.
  • A 1 mm low-profile frame. Thin enough to sit almost flush to the wall, and light enough that a 60-inch piece doesn't need a stud hunt.
  • Printed from high-resolution source files. Every design is matched to the sizes we offer, so a 96-inch print is as sharp as a 20-inch one — the most common failure point in oversized art.
  • Eco-friendly materials throughout. Frame, fabric and packaging.
  • Designed in Salt Lake City, Utah, shipped within 4 days, and covered by our No Hassle Guarantee — if it isn't right, we fix it or refund it.

Living Room Wall Art: Frequently Asked Questions

What size wall art should I hang above my living room sofa?

Choose art that spans two-thirds to three-quarters of the sofa width. For an 84-inch sofa that means roughly 56–63 inches of art. Center it on the sofa with the bottom edge 6–10 inches above the back cushion. If you're between two sizes, take the larger one — undersized art is the most common living room decorating mistake.

How high should living room wall art be hung?

Hang so the center of the piece sits 57–60 inches from the floor, which is average eye level. Over furniture, the 6–10 inch clearance rule takes priority. Most people hang art four to six inches too high; lowering it makes the art feel connected to the room instead of floating above it.

What counts as large or extra large wall art for a living room?

Large generally means 36 inches or more on the shortest side. Extra large starts around 60 inches and runs to our largest 96×96 in. pieces. Rooms with sectionals, ceilings over 10 feet, or open-plan layouts usually need the extra large range for the art to register at all.

Should I choose one large piece or a gallery wall?

One large piece for most rooms. It is simpler to hang, reads as more considered, and does not require you to get seven spacing decisions right. Gallery walls suit eclectic and traditional interiors, but only work when the pieces share a unifying element — frame, palette, subject or medium.

How do I coordinate several pieces in one living room?

Pick one thread and hold it across every piece: a shared color palette, a shared frame, a shared subject or a shared medium. Two or three works sharing at least one of those read as a collection. Vary everything at once and the wall reads as clutter.

Can I hang large wall art on drywall without finding a stud?

Usually yes. Our frames use a 1 mm low-profile construction that keeps large sizes light, so rated drywall anchors or toggle bolts handle most pieces. For anything over 30 lbs, anchor into a stud or use multiple mounting points. Hanging hardware and instructions ship with every piece.

Should wall art match my sofa or rug?

No. Echo rather than match. Take one or two accent colors out of the artwork and repeat them in cushions, a throw or a ceramic. Art chosen to match upholstery dates as soon as the furniture changes, and reads as a showroom set rather than a room someone built.

Can I print my own photo as living room wall art?

Yes. Upload any high-resolution image through our custom print service and choose from the same sizes and frames as the rest of the collection. Aim for at least 150 DPI at your finished print size so detail holds up at scale.

What does living room wall art cost here?

Pieces in this collection start at $103 and rise with size, with the largest formats reaching into the $1,800–$2,100 range. Every size of a given design is priced on the product page, so you can compare a 30×40 against a 60×80 before deciding.
