Kids Wall Art That Survives the Room It's In
Art in a child's room has three problems no other room has. It can fall. It gets marked. And the child's taste changes faster than you'd replace it. Most wall art is designed for none of those, which is why so much of it ends up in a cupboard within two years.
The format here happens to answer all three: no glazing, so there's no glass over a bed; a fabric graphic that comes out of the frame and cleans; and a swappable graphic, so when a six-year-old declares the dinosaurs babyish, the frame stays and only the artwork changes.
Hanging Wall Art in a Kids Room Safely
- Nothing directly above a cot or a bed. This is the one non-negotiable. Use the adjacent wall, or the wall the child faces, and leave the space above the sleeping position clear.
- No glass, by design. There's no glazing on any piece here, which removes the main hazard glazed frames introduce into a child's room.
- Two fixing points, not one. A single central hook lets a piece swing and eventually work loose. Two anchors spread the load and keep it level.
- Anchor into a stud where you can. Rated toggle bolts otherwise. The 1 mm frame keeps weight low, but a child's room is not the place to rely on a single drywall plug.
- Hang lower than you would elsewhere. Centre it around 48–52 inches rather than 57–60 so it sits at the child's eye level, not yours. Raise it as they grow.
For safe, breakage-free options in other rooms too, see fabric wall art.
Subjects by Age, and How Long Each One Lasts
The most useful question isn't what a two-year-old likes. It's what a seven-year-old won't ask you to take down.
| Age | What works | Lasts until | Filter to use |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–2 (nursery) | Soft shapes, gentle animals, muted colour | Age 4 | Vibe → Serene, Palette → Neutral |
| 3–5 | Recognisable animals, bold simple colour | Age 7 | Vibe → Playful, Palette → Colorful |
| 6–9 | Real animals, space, maps, illustration | Age 12 | Kind → Animals, Illustration |
| 10–13 | Landscape, urban, graphic abstract | Adulthood | Kind → Landscape, Urban |
| Any age (safest bet) | Minimal line-drawn subjects | Adulthood | Vibe → Minimal |
| Shared room | Neutral subject, no character IP | Adulthood | Palette → Neutral |
The cheapest strategy: buy the frame once at a size that suits the wall long term, then buy replacement graphics as taste changes. A new graphic costs less than a new framed piece, and the hook never moves.
Art That Can Actually Be Cleaned
A child's room is the only room where art routinely gets touched, drawn on and thrown at. Paper prints don't survive that and canvas can only be dusted.
- The graphic comes out of the frame. Because the artwork is fabric rather than paper, it can be removed and cleaned — the single most useful property in a kids' room.
- Check the care instructions supplied with your piece before washing anything. Temperature and cycle matter, and getting them wrong is the one way to damage a graphic that would otherwise last years.
- Between cleans, a soft brush is enough. Or a vacuum on low suction.
- Sticky fingers don't sink in. Sublimated dye is bonded into the fibre rather than sitting on the surface, so cleaning the fabric doesn't lift the image with it.
- Hang it where it can be reached, deliberately. Art at a child's eye level will get touched. Choosing a washable format is what makes that fine instead of a problem.

Choosing Wall Art for Kids Without Locking In a Theme
The most common regret with children's art is committing the room to a theme that expires. Five ways round it.
- Real over cartoon. A photograph of an owl works at three and at thirteen. An illustrated owl character works at three.
- Subject over franchise. Space, animals, maps and nature all grow with a child. A specific character doesn't, and it dates the room to a year.
- Let colour do the childhood, not the subject. A bright palette reads as playful without the subject itself being juvenile — which means only the palette needs to change later.
- One large piece, not six small ones. Kids' rooms are already busy with toys, books and colour. A single well-scaled piece is calmer and easier to sleep in.
- Let them choose the second one. A child who picked the art defends it. Buy the frame and the first graphic yourself, then let them choose the replacement.

Kids Wall Art: Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to hang wall art in a child's room?
With the right format and mounting, yes. These pieces have no glazing, so there's no glass to break, and the 1 mm frame keeps weight low. Regardless of weight, don't hang anything directly above a cot or bed — use the adjacent wall, anchor into a stud or rated toggle bolts, and use two fixing points rather than one.
How high should kids wall art hang?
Lower than adult height. Centre it around 48–52 inches from the floor rather than the usual 57–60, so it sits at the child's eye level rather than yours. Raise it as they grow — which is easy if you keep the same frame and only change the graphic.
Can kids wall art be cleaned?
Yes, and it's the main practical reason to choose this format for a child's room. The artwork is fabric rather than paper, so the graphic can be removed from the frame and cleaned, which paper and canvas can't be. Follow the care instructions supplied with your piece rather than a general guide.
How do I stop the art being outgrown in two years?
Choose real subjects over cartoon ones, and subjects over franchises. A photograph of an owl works at three and at thirteen; an illustrated character works at three. Let a bright palette do the childhood rather than the subject itself, so only the colour has to change later.
Can I change the art as my child gets older?
Yes. Every design is available as a graphic on its own as well as a complete framed piece, so the frame and its fixings stay in place and only the artwork changes. It costs less than a new framed piece and takes about thirty seconds.
Can I print my child's own drawing?
Yes, and it's one of the better pieces you can put in a kids' room. Photograph or scan the drawing, upload it through our custom print service and choose any size in the range. Aim for at least 150 DPI at the finished size.
